Environmental Initiatives
Creating a safe, environmentally friendly environment has been a part of everything we do, whether for new construction or existing homes, commercial and public spaces.
- Achieved Sustainable Jersey Silver Certification,the highest certification available, recognizing our comprehensive sustainability efforts. This level rewards our many environmental projects, activities and ordinances over a multi-year period.
- Preserved open space, including the Hall property, and are actively working to protect the Sanders Farm.
- Created the Green Ecoscape Demonstration Area in Community Park—featuring pollinator gardens, a rain garden, native trees, and a garden seating area.
- Encouraged adoption of clean energy transportation by introducing two electric vehicles to the township fleet, encouraging and requiring EV charging stations in new residential, commercial, and retail construction (including chargers at the new Woodmont Apartments, Lofts apartments, and W Square as well as retail and commercial areas), giving everyone access to charging for EV ownership.
- West Windsor was the first in the area to hold a National Drive Electric Week electric vehicle exhibition, now going into its 8th year.
- First community in NJ to get SolSmart silver certification for our commitment to encouraging solar power. We streamlined residential solar installation with a new permit guide to promote clean energy adoption.
- Added conditions for various new buildings, including warehouses, to be solar ready, making it economical to add solar and to pursue community solar projects for reduced energy costs for township residents.
- Tree City USA certification - We are committed to our trees in our open spaces, street trees and with our tree removal ordinance for private properties.
